JOSEPH YERKES AND HIS DESCENDANTS BY ELIAS S. WOODMAN
He settled in Northville soon after, and continued his professional practice till 1853, when he removed to Detroit, where he advanced rapidly in his calling, being elected judge of probate in the fall of 1800, which office he filled with signal ability for a term of four years. In 1865 he returned to Northville, where he has since resided in easy retirement, giving his attention mostly to his farm and village properties. As a lawyer, Judge Yerkes took advanced rank among his legal brethren, such as Messrs. Howard, Vandyke, Emmons, and other legal lights, while his genial manner and ready conversation gave him a ready welcome in polite society.,
Mary Yerkes, born July 26, 1823; married John Emery October 8, 1840; died March 6, 1851. Three children, all living.
John Yerkes, born September 12, 1825; married Elizabeth Wing; died July 28, 1851. No offspring.
Silas A. Yerkes, born November 8, 1827; married Eleanor McCartney; resides at Bennington Station, Mich. One child living, Mrs. Jay Perkins, of Northville, Mich.
Robert Yerkes, born September 26, 1829; married Sarah Holmes, October 7, 1856. Four children. Resides on a farm near Northville, in affluent circumstances. Mr. Yerkes is a representative man of his county, well and widely known for his active interest in public enterprises, especially the cause of education. He has long filled the office of justice of the peace, also county treasurer for two years.
Charles Yerkes, born April 19, 1833; married Eveline Wells. Three children. Is a farmer, well to do and one of Novi's best citizens.
Stephen Yerkes, born May 20, 1835; married Nellie Dunham; died January S, 1881. No offspring.
