JOSEPH YERKES AND HIS DESCENDANTS BY ELIAS S. WOODMAN
As already stated, Joseph Yerkes left, at his death, a family consisting of seven children, which I name briefly in the order of their birth as follows:
William Yerkes, born in Penn. Sept. 29, 1794. He married Hester Dennis, of Ovid, N. Y., 1817. She died Sept. 11, 1881. Ten children.
John Yerkes, born Aug. 29, 1799; married Sarah Thornton at Novi, Mich., Aug. 21, 1828; died Feb. 14, 1877.
Mary Yerkes, born March 30, 1802, lived singly, and died at her father's homestead in Plymouth, Sept. 20, 1879.
Sarah Yerkes, born July 26, 1805; married Ephraim Utley Sept., 1828.
Five children.
Elizabeth Yerkes, born July 20, 1809; married James Wilkinson at Novi, Mich., 1828. Six children.
Hannah Yerkes, born Dec. 15, 1812.; married Clark A. Griswold, Sept. 22, 1829; died April 2, 1839.
Joseph Yerkes, Jr., born June 3, 1815; lives in Novi, Mich.
The first of the above named seven, William Yerkes, and his wife Hester, are the progenitors of a large family of children, most of whom are living to-day, the heads of families, and occupy honorable if not prominent places in the commonwealth of Michigan. A brief enumeration of them here follows:
Joseph Yerkes, born Oct. 8, 1819; married Mary Dunlap Oct 7, 1840; resides on a farm in Novi. Seven children.
William Purdy Yerkes, born Oct. 23, 1820; married Sallie Cady of Northville, Wayne county, Dec. 16, 1851; entered the law office of George and Moses Wisner in 1843 as a student of law; admitted to the bar of Pontiac Dec, 1846.
