St. Joseph County By Judge William H. Cross
Now there comes to my mind the memory of two of the sons of men who first came here fifty-four years ago to-day. Samuel Evans, who did not go with his father's family when in 1833-4 they moved to Texas,
but wheu he heard there was danger surrounding them he went to share it with them, and his life went out while with Col Fanning, in the Woody slaughter at Goliad. And his gallant cousin, John Brown, who went with Gen. Scott to the halls of the Montezumas and led the first band of our army within the gates of the city of Mexico; but the glory of his noble daring was gathered up and appropriated by the colonel of his regiment, and the brave lieutenant who arose from his sick bed that day and braced himself for the charge by the use of tonics, was forgotten in the official reports. He then returned home to die from the effects of that effort and that campaign.
