FLINT TWENTY YEARS AGO
PRESENTED BY EPHRAIM S. WILLIAMS OP FLINT
"How wondrous are the changes, Since twenty years ago. "
Editor Citizen: —A little after the hour of noon, in one of the faultless autumnal days of which the denizens of Michigan are so proud, twenty years ago, I descended from a seat beside that loquacious Jehu, John Stevens, on one of the three great stages of Boss's line, on that day running between Fentonville and East Saginaw, at the door of the "Carlton house" in Flint, where I was met by the stately proprietor of the "line" with unlighted cigar between his lips and the genial presence of the landlord, John B. Hamilton.
Recalling vividly, after the lapse of two decades, my conflicting emotions as I stood among strangers in the little place which I had chosen for my future home and with whose interests, mercantile and social, I was destined
to become identified for so long a period, and of my impressions of the place then, and of the place and people as my acquaintance with both increased, it seemed a fitting time—and perhaps not entirely without interest—to revive some of the old recollections, and conjure into our presence some of the faces and forms which long ago were familiar in various situations in life and helped to make up the society of this newly dubbed city.
Entering the city on my elevated seat, my first impressions of Saginaw street were more favorable than had my advent occurred two or three years •earlier, for the devastation caused by the fires on either side had been in part overcome by the erection of the block north of Kearsley street, including the Citizens' bank buildings and the Dewey block.
