EARLY MICHIGAN MICHIGAN TERRITORY IN 1820
The Grand Haven Herald recently sent out a request for all persons settling before May 14, 1826, to communicate with it. We condense from nearly two columns of interesting letters the year of settlement, name and present location of all who responded. In 1815, A. L. and B. O. Williams, who reside at Owosso, E. S. Williams, Flint, and their sister, Mrs. M. A. Hodges, Pontiac, came to Michigan; S. C. Manson, East Saginaw, aged. 85, came to Detroit in 1817. C. C. and H. A. Rood, Grand Rapids, J. E. Voorheis, Frankfort, Mrs. J". E. Gillett, Lansing, Mrs. N. Frost, Cheboygan, David Knox, Sr.. St. ? Joseph, and J. M. Dewey, Owosso, came in 1823. Mrs. Hope Leman, North Newberg, Shiawassee county, Simeon French, Detroit, Ezekiel French, Dubuque, Iowa, Mrs. W. Green, aged 83, and Mrs. George Collins, Farmington, aged 89, John Geddes, aged 84, and J. J. Parshall, aged 61, moved into the territory in 1824. Edward Hawley, Kalamazoo, Philo Parsons, Ypsilanti, aged 79, J. D. Ackerman, Union City, Mrs. A. Beardslee, Flint, Allen Tibbits, Coldwater, aged 81, Mrs. J. E. Hawkins, Fenton, 81, Herman N. Hicks, Ann Arbor, 68, Orange K. VanAmberg, Brighton, Rufus Thayer, Plymouth, 85, William Power, Farmington, 70, Ira Hough, Plymouth, 83, Leland Green, Farmington, 83, Allen Durfree, 83, and A. Kingsley, Livonia, came in 1825. Dexter Briggs, Livonia, 81, Earl D. Hamblin, Imlay City, Roswell Burt, Davisburg, Sullivan Armstrong, Tremont, Alfred J. Armstrong, Ashland Center, and Horace Carpenter, Ann Arbor, 80, come in 1826. No doubt there are others, but I am not sure, and I hope may be added those from your own-county besides our old friend Allen Tibbits as above.
What a host of memories must William B. Sprague have in store, who has lived in every president's time from Washington to Cleveland.
