Michigan Macomb County
The word Congregationalism has a double reference. It sometimes is used of a denomination, sometimes of a polity. When used of a de nomination it includes the historic faith as well as the form of govern- .1 ment of the body. We treat of it to-day only as a polity.
The principles of this polity spring logically, it is believed, out of the . kingdom of heaven, which Christ came to set up, and of which all true churches are visible manifestations. Yet men view these principles in their relation to the manifesting churches differently, and hence differ-ent polities arise, which should be studied chiefly in their fundamental conception, and which will be found to have many principles in common while each has and must have one peculiar to itself. It is this peculia principle that constitutes the polity what it is, determines all its distinct! tive practices, and dominates the common principles into a harmonious development about itself.
