Michigan Macomb County
Celebration of the Semi-Centennial of the Romeo Congregational Church,
August 16th, 1878.
An account of the proceedings of the Congregational church in Ro-meo on Friday, August 16th, 1878, in commemoration of the completion of fifty years of history by that church, the first church organized in Romeo, and the second Congregational church organized in the state.
Today marks fifty years since the Congregational church of this pleasant and thriving village of 2,500 inhabitants was organized. All this region was then almost an unbroken forest, and the little handful of log houses was known by the significant title of Indian Village. Hither came Rev. Isaac W. Ruggles, one of the pioneer home missionaries of the state, and gathered together into a church seven persons, a little seed corn of the kingdom whose fruit has since shaken like Lebanon. They met in a log school house, for already had these early settlers from New England brought her institutions, and this new organization was but adding another to the number.
