A SKETCH OF LUCIUS LYON

by GEORGE H. WHITE

In common with all eastern people he had an incorrect idea of it, and where to locate in it, and what business to engage in, and he found that none of those he met were able to answer his numerous questions. His intention of going west was noised about Burlington, then the center of learning, art and science in Vermont. In those times it was looked upon' as almost akin to undertaking to circumnavigate the globe. The result was the proffering of many letters of introduction to men of distinction at various points along his intended route to Detroit, including Albany and Cincinnati. His information was so meagre and unsatisfactory that he resolved to go by the way of Albany and remain there a few days endeavoring to get better knowledge on which to base his plans. His letters secured him acquaintanceship there with several distinguished men who were comparatively well informed about the western territories, so from information thus gleaned he concluded upon settling in Michigan, and to first go to Detroit and there determine whereabouts in the territory he would locate. He found that his limited means would at best barely suffice to take him there; the rates for traveling were so very expensive in those days, and the wages and salaries so very small. At this time he was greatly favored by being informed by one of his newly made friends that a Mr. Silas Farmer* was going to Detroit concerning a ladies seminary of which he was principal, and that he wished to hire another teacher if he could find one to please him; a meeting between him and Mr. Lyon was arranged and had; each found himself well pleased with the other, and arrangements were concluded for him to fill the position if he wished. This greatly relieved Mr. Lyon's anxiety as to what he could do when he arrived. He soon left Albany bearing with him to Gen. Cass and other distinguished men of that day, letters which led to the formation of valued and lifelong friendships.
