Michigan Jackson Mi.
Mr. John Durand was chaplain of the day; though not a minister of the gospel, Mr. Durand was a strict and conscientious member of the Methodist church, and was known to be strong in prayer. He opened the services on the hill, before the delivery of the oration, with prayer,
and his fervent manner and evident sincerity caused his words, which were fitly spoken, to be very impressive.
Mr. Horace Blackman was marshal of the day, and Lieutenant Edward Clark, of Ann Arbor, was assistant marshal. The manner in which the exercises were conducted, under their masterly ordering, excited the admiration of every Pottawattomie who was so fortunate as to witness the procession, which, forming on the public square, marched to the brow of the hill near the south end of Jackson street, where the oration was
delivered.
