KALAMAZOO COUNTY
[Read at the Annual Pioneer Reunion of Kalamazoo county, held at Vicksburg, August 5, 1885. ] Mr. George Torrey, secretary of the association, then presented his annual
secretary's report
Pioneers, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Once again we meet in this part of the county and for the third time, to
hold our annual reunion and picnic, and to hear the voices of pioneers in song or story of the olden time, to meet long separated friends and acquaintances of former times, to look each other in the face, to grasp hands that have grown harder and more wrinkled since they used to meet more often in friendly clasp, to talk over the days that are no more, the scenes that are vanished except in memory, and to recall the form, and the face, and the character of friends who have gone before—a happy privilege, indeed,
vouchsafed us.
Owing to the fact that so many other meetings were in progress last season, and a heated political canvass being at its height, the usual annual reunion was postponed, much to the disappointment of many. It is the only year since 1871, when the society was organized in Kalamazoo, that a meeting has not been held, and every gathering has grown larger and larger and seemed to be more and more enjoyed. But the circumstances were such last season as fully warranted the postponement.
This year while the officers of the society were discussing where to hold the meeting, a very kind and cordial invitation was received from the officers of the harvest home festival to meet with them at this place, conveying with their kind message the assurance that the pioneers would be well cared for.
