Michigan Judges George G Bates
These judges gave close attention to the case, but what a contrast! Judge Wilkins, quick as lightning and restless as the eagle, gave close attention for a short time; then arose, walked behind the canopy, took out an immense pipe, filled it with tobacco and commenced to smoke, all the time listening to the arguments in the case. Judge Sibley sat with his body thrown forward to catch every word, as he was a little deaf; and Judge Morrell sat there like a majestic statue.
Forty-five years have rolled away, and what changes! Then this peninsula was a mere outpost of civilization ; to-day we have more than a million and a half of people. School-houses are erected on every square section of land, while elegant churches, with their spires pointing heavenward, dot every portion of the peninsula. Our grand Michigan school system is the pride and glory of the Northwest. The public affairs have been economically administered by the various parties.
