Michigan Judges George G Bates
Capt. Wight wanted
us to remain on his boat until morning ; but I saw some clouds gathering in the northwest and I went to Sheldon McKnight and asked him if lie didn't think it was going to blow. He thought it was, so we had Capt. Wight put us three ashore, and we landed in the sands at the
-mouth of the river. We walked up to the hotel, and during the night
the Pioneer went to pieces, and there was not enough left of her to make
a walking-stick. Capt. Wight got safely on shore after a narrow escape.
This same Capt. Wight knew something of the Michigan banks that
our friend Gov. Felch has been talking about. Confidentially, Mr. Chairman and pioneers of Michigan, I knew a little myself about that Bank of Sandstone, and I also had a pocket-full of bills on the Bank of Flint.
