(George W. Peck, postmaster), we took the tow-path on the bank of the river. I might tell you of the many " pull-backs " Lansing has had in struggling for an existence, the greatest of which was the fact that, at the expiration of its first twenty years, there was a chance of the capital being again removed. This club constantly hung over our heads like the sword of Damocles, and undoubtedly deterred many from investing in our city. At a very early date I commenced collecting everything I could which would assist in making and preserving the history of this city, and frequently in hauling in my net found many an odd fish, some of whose nationality I am unable to explain, a portion of which I now present to the Michigan State Pioneer Society.
