HISTORY OF HORTICULTURE IN MICHIGAN BY J. C. HOLIES, OF DETROIT
The constitution of the society was amended by striking out in article 5, the words, "The first Tuesday of December, " and inserting "The second Tuesday in January, "
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:
President—J. C. Holmes, Detroit.
Vice President—J. E. Perigo, Toledo.
Secretary and Treasurer—J. T. Blois, Jonesville.
The third annual meeting was held at Jackson on the 8th of January, 185C.
The following gentlemen were elected members: J. E. Beebe, W. R. Gibson,
J. T. Wilson, D. Cook, W. T. Howell, R, Dunning, Doct. I). Foote, J. M.
Harwood, M. McNaughton, Wm. Hayden, of Jackson; E. Moody, Wright
Corners, N. Y.; Ira C. and A. A. Olds, of Hartford, Van Buren Co., Mich. The schedule of prices of fruit trees was discussed, but no changes were made. Many specimens of apples were placed upon the tables by the members.
On motion the question of separating seeds from the fruit, also the treatment of stock seedlings was discussed by Messrs. Blois, Steere, Moody, Willson, Beebe, Dunning, Foote and Holmes. The question of pruning in the nursery was then discussed.
At the evening session of the 9th of January, the examination of fruits on exhibition and the discussion of their respective merits, occupied the evening. Messrs. Cook, Moody, Holmes, Gibson and Blois were the principal speakers. At the morning session on the 10th of January, the pear and grape questions were discussed by Messrs. Moody, Knapp, Beebe and Holmes.
