HISTORY OF ALPENA COUNTY AFTER 1870 BY WILLIAM BOULTON IN 1876
Vessels can go almost up to the dam, which is distant from the mouth of the river about a mile. There are four docks outside the river which extend into the bay. viz.: Campbell, Potter & Co. 's dock, Deacon Hlitchcock's dock, the Trowbridge dock, and the Alpena Lumber Co. 's dock.
